The prologue of the Wife Of Bath is longer than the tale itself. The Wife follows rule of experience rather than listening to the authorities. The Wife admired young men and was not afraid of not being a virgin, as there was no proof that God commanded virginity. She was true and faithful to her fifth husband until he died. She had never had complete control over her husbands because they would all die as soon as she got close to being able to control them. The Wife believes that the sex organs should be used for pleasure. She is about to marry her sixth husband. The friar is defensive over why the Wife would question what the church is preaching.
In the tale The Wife of Bath starts out with a young knight raping a young maiden. The royalty sent the young knight on a quest to find out what every woman likes. If he could not fulfill this he would be beheaded in one year. The knight being unsuccessful starts his journey home.Where he comes across an old hag who helps fulfill his quest. In order to do so she says the knight must grant her anything. She insists that they get married. The hag says that he can have her old and ugly self with faithful qualities or a young beautiful women with no guarantees of her quality. He elects to leave the choice up to her and she chooses to become young and beautiful.
